Dianne Baker Field

Dianne Baker Field (formerly known as Pioneer Field), the home field for the TWU softball team, is nestled on the north side of the TWU campus just east of the Chancellor's residence .

The name of the field was changed in February 2019 by a vote of the TWU Board of Regents upon the University's recommendation to recognize and honor Baker, a TWU Distinguished Alumna.  Designed by Baker, the field was completed in 1996 at a cost of $151,500.  Pioneer Field was constructed to meet the requirements to host NCAA regional and national tournaments as well as high school playoff games, and has an infield composition of 60 clay/40 sand.  In 1999 after a successful campaign spearheaded by TWU softball alumni and supporters, lights were added at a cost of $48,000.  In 2001, additional dugout and facility lighting was added.

The work of TWU's outstanding Landscaping Department was recognized nationally with the 2011 NCAA Division II Stabilizer Solutions/NFCA Field Maintenance Award and the 2002 Sports Turf Managers Association Softball Field of the Year award in the College/University Division.

The softball facility also includes outdoor batting cages, bleacher and hillside seating, and a press box. The grass on the field, the same type used the Texas Rangers, is a mixture of rye in the winter and Bermuda in the spring and summer.  Each dugout has a private restroom, a water fountain, electricity, benches, storage shelves and closets.  In 2011, a 27-foot scoreboard was added in right center field featuring inning-by-inning scoring and a state-of-the-art video messaging display.

On September 21, 2019, the University officially dedicated the field after Baker's historic gift of $500,000 to TWU Softball for renovations, upgrades and maintenance of the facility.  At "Bake's Legacy Event," the upgraded scoreboard with an HD video screen and Stadium Pro sound system was unveiled and branded as Dianne Baker Field.  More than 600 people were in attendance for the grand celebration.

Current projects underway include the removal of the seating and press box, and the installation of an enhanced covered seating area with some chair backs and a larger press box.  These improvements will be place for the start of the 2020 softball season.
